WHAT IS A CREDIT UNION?

A credit union is a financial co-operative that offers its members a savings and low cost loan service.  

Ryton Credit Union Ltd was established in September 1997 and provides a financial service for anyone who lives or works in the south side of Rotherham in South Yorkshire.

It is wholly owned and controlled by its members.

Ryton Credit Union is here to help people to save money and have the benefit of low cost credit.

Who manages the credit union?  It is managed on a day-to-day basis by volunteers.  Also a voluntary unpaid Board of Directors oversee the running of the credit union and formulates policies and strategy within legislation in the interest of members.  All Directors receive appropriate training as required.

Is my money safe?  Ryton is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority.  It is also part of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which provides protection for  financial institutions that get into difficulties.  Ryton is covered by the Financial Ombudsman Scheme, which members can use if they have a complaint, which cannot be resolved by us.

Ryton is a member of the Association of British Credit Unions Ltd.

To become a member of Ryton, there is a £1 joining fee to pay and you can save as much or as little as you like.  You  can pay money into a Collection Point by cash or cheque or you can pay by Standing Order.

To receive a loan you will need to -

● have saved with us for at least 12 weeks

● completed an Loan Application Form.

● be over 18 years of age.

We offer the following services to our members:

● low cost loans at 1% per month on the reducing balance (12.68%)

● free insurance cover for its members savings and loans (subject to health eligibility)
